DTF vs Sublimation vs Screen Printing: Which Should You Choose?

Choose DTF for full-colour designs on any fabric colour and material with no minimum order; choose sublimation for polyester and hard-coated items where you need the print to feel invisible; choose screen printing only for large bulk runs of simple, few-colour designs on cotton. For most Indian print startups in 2026, DTF is the most flexible starting point.

These three methods solve overlapping problems, but each wins in a different situation. This comparison from Imprint Solution, a printing equipment supplier in Bhiwandi, Maharashtra, lays out where each one belongs so you invest in the right process the first time.

When should you choose DTF printing?

DTF is the most versatile of the three. It prints full-colour designs onto a PET film, which is then heat-pressed onto almost any fabric — cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, light or dark — with no minimum order. That flexibility is why it has become the default for on-demand t-shirt, hoodie and workwear businesses in India. The trade-off is a slight film layer you can feel on the garment, and a higher entry cost than a basic sublimation setup.

When is sublimation the better choice?

Sublimation turns ink into gas that dyes the fibre itself, so the print becomes part of the fabric with zero hand feel and outstanding wash life. The catch: it only works on polyester or polyester-coated surfaces, and only on light colours, because the process cannot print white. It is ideal for sports jerseys, polyester mugs, phone cases, mouse pads and hard-coated items — not for cotton t-shirts.

Does screen printing still make sense in 2026?

Screen printing remains the cheapest per-unit method for large runs of the same simple design — say 500 t-shirts with a one- or two-colour logo. The economics reverse for small orders or many colours, because every colour needs its own screen and setup. If your business is on-demand or short-run, DTF will almost always beat it on total cost and speed.

Which method should a new Indian print business start with?

If you can only buy one process, start with DTF. It covers the widest range of fabrics and order sizes, needs no per-design setup, and lets you take single-piece custom orders profitably from day one. Add sublimation later when you take on polyester sportswear or hard goods, and consider screen printing only if you land recurring bulk contracts.

Frequently asked questions

Is DTF better than sublimation?
Neither is universally better — they suit different jobs. DTF prints on any colour and fabric including cotton, while sublimation gives a superior no-feel finish but only on light-coloured polyester. Most shops eventually run both, starting with DTF for its flexibility.

Can DTF print on cotton?
Yes. DTF prints cleanly on 100% cotton, polyester and blends, in any garment colour, thanks to its white ink underbase. This is its biggest advantage over sublimation, which cannot print on cotton or dark fabrics at all.

Is DTF cheaper than screen printing?
For small and medium orders, yes — DTF has no per-design setup cost, so a run of ten mixed designs is cheap. Screen printing only becomes cheaper per unit at high volumes of a single, simple design.

Which method lasts longest in the wash?
All three are durable when done correctly. Sublimation is the most permanent because it dyes the fibre; a properly cured DTF transfer comfortably survives 30-plus washes; screen prints last well but can crack if the ink layer is heavy.
